If you look at a map of Cebu, Moalboal and Malapascua might not seem that far apart.
They are both in Cebu, after all.
But this is something that surprises many of our guests: Moalboal is on the southwestern side of the island, while Malapascua sits off Cebu’s northern tip.
Travelling between them means crossing a large part of mainland Cebu (about 6-7 hours), plus taking a 30-minute boat ride between Malapascua and Maya Port.
However, both places are absolutely worth visiting. Malapascua is famous for thresher sharks, quiet beaches, and its relaxed island atmosphere. Moalboal has the sardine run, sea turtles, diving, canyoneering, and plenty of places to eat and stay.
Many of our guests, particularly Australian tourists, visit both during the same Cebu trip. We usually pick them up at Maya Port after their Malapascua stay, then drive them directly to their hotel in Moalboal.
Here is what you need to know before doing the same journey.
What is the quickest way from Moalboal to Malapascua?
The most direct route is:
Moalboal → Maya Port by private vehicle → Malapascua by passenger boat
If you are travelling in the opposite direction, simply reverse it:
Malapascua → Maya Port by boat → Moalboal by private vehicle
The land journey between Maya Port and Moalboal normally takes around six to seven hours. That can become longer if you stop for food, toilet breaks, sightseeing, or heavy traffic.
The boat crossing between Maya Port and Malapascua takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, but you also need to allow time for buying tickets, waiting for the boat, loading luggage, and possible weather delays.
In other words, this is a full travel day.
Do not schedule an afternoon dive, canyoneering tour, or another major activity on the same day. Give yourself time to arrive, check in, eat, and rest.
How do the different transport options compare?
Public transport is possible, and we would never say that everyone needs a private transfer.
If you are travelling alone, carrying one backpack, and do not mind changing vehicles, the bus or shared van will save you money.
However, the trip becomes much more tiring when you add children, several suitcases, dive equipment, terminal transfers, and a boat schedule that you cannot afford to miss.

Why is the journey so long?
The land route between Maya Port and Moalboal is approximately 210 kilometres.
That might not sound too bad if you are used to motorways. Cebu’s roads are different. You will pass through towns, coastal communities, markets, school zones, and stretches where traffic moves slowly.
We normally use Cebu’s west-coast route because it avoids much of the heavier traffic around Metro Cebu. From Maya, the journey heads south through North Cebu and continues along the western side of the island toward Moalboal.
This route is not just a practical shortcut. It is also one of the most beautiful long drives in Cebu.
You will pass quiet towns, mountains, countryside, and coastal areas. On clear days, you can see Negros Island across the Tañon Strait. Some parts of the drive feel very different from the busy roads around Cebu City.
Yes, six or seven hours is long. But the views make the journey much more enjoyable.
What is the trip like with children?
We have handled families travelling this route, and the most important advice is simple: plan for stops.
Children may need to:
- Use the toilet
- Eat or buy snacks
- Stretch their legs
- Get some fresh air
- Take a break from sitting inside the vehicle
Adults usually appreciate those stops too, honestly.
A direct private transfer lets the family stop when needed instead of waiting for a bus schedule or worrying about losing their seats and luggage.
The driver can stop at a safe restaurant, coffee shop, convenience store, or scenic area along the way. These breaks will make the journey longer, but they usually make it much more comfortable.
If you are travelling from Moalboal toward Malapascua, however, you need to balance those stops with the boat schedule at Maya Port. Leaving early is always the safer option.
Can you travel from Moalboal to Malapascua in one day?
Yes, but you need to leave Moalboal very early.
Passenger boats between Maya Port and Malapascua typically operate during daylight hours. The Malapascua PumpBoat Operators Association announced that the final passenger trip is strictly at 5:00 PM.
Do not plan to arrive at 4:55 PM. Traffic, stopovers, and road conditions can quickly eat into your buffer. Leaving Moalboal early is always safer.
Boat operations can also change because of weather and sea conditions. Strong waves, tropical storms, or Coast Guard advisories may lead to temporary suspensions, even if the roads are clear.
The Philippine Coast Guard is usually very active in monitoring conditions around northern Cebu. Advisories may change quickly, so check with your accommodation, boat operator, or transfer provider before travelling.
What happens if the boats are suspended?
If the Coast Guard suspends sea travel, you will need to wait until boats are allowed to operate again.
This does not necessarily mean your entire trip is ruined. It simply means you may need to spend a night near Maya Port.
Arriyus Apartelle is right beside the port and is one of the most practical places to stay if you miss the last boat or if sea travel is suspended. You can rest overnight, then walk over to Maya Port once boat operations resume.

How do you travel by public transport?
The budget route between Moalboal and Malapascua normally goes through Cebu City.
From Moalboal to Malapascua, the journey generally looks like this:
- Travel from your Moalboal hotel to the main road or bus terminal.
- Take a bus or van from Moalboal to Cebu City.
- Arrive at Cebu South Bus Terminal.
- Transfer across Cebu City to the North Bus Terminal.
- Take another bus or van from Cebu City to Maya Port.
- Buy your boat ticket to Malapascua.
Going from Malapascua to Moalboal involves the same connections in reverse.
The difficult part is not any single step. It is the combination of waiting, changing terminals, carrying luggage, and making sure you reach Maya while the boats are still running.
The public route may be fine for backpackers with flexible schedules. For a family, group, older traveller, or diver carrying equipment, it can be a very long and exhausting day.
Is there a direct bus from Maya Port to Moalboal?
There is normally no single public bus that takes you directly from Maya Port to your hotel in Moalboal.
Most public transport options take you back through Cebu City, where you need to change terminals and board another southbound bus.
A pre-booked private vehicle can travel directly down Cebu’s west coast instead. You do not need to return to Cebu City, change terminals, or find another ride from Moalboal town to your hotel.
Your driver can meet you at Maya Port and take you directly to Panagsama Beach, White Beach, or another hotel or resort in the Moalboal area.
What if you are carrying dive gear or several suitcases?
Please tell your transfer provider exactly how much luggage you are bringing.
Do not just say “a few bags.”
We need to know:
- The number of passengers
- The number of large suitcases
- The number of smaller bags
- Whether you have dive equipment
- Whether you are bringing a stroller or other bulky item
This helps us decide whether your group needs a sedan, SUV, van, or more than one vehicle.
Passenger capacity and luggage capacity are not always the same thing. A vehicle may technically fit a certain number of people, but it might not safely hold those passengers plus several large suitcases and dive bags.
It is much better to assign the correct vehicle from the beginning than discover at pickup that everything will not fit.
How much does a private Maya Port to Moalboal transfer cost?
Transfer prices can change because this is a long route and fuel costs fluctuate.
Rather than publishing a price that may be incorrect by the time you travel, we recommend asking for an updated quote based on:

- Number of passengers
- Amount of luggage
- Exact pickup and drop-off points

Should you visit both Malapascua and Moalboal?
Absolutely, if you have enough time.
The two places offer completely different experiences. Malapascua is quieter and particularly popular with divers hoping to see thresher sharks. Moalboal is livelier, easier for snorkellers, and famous for its sardine run and sea turtles close to shore.
We have driven many Australian tourists between the two, usually from Maya Port down to Moalboal. Although guests often comment on how long the journey is, the drive itself becomes part of their Cebu experience.
The key is not to underestimate the distance.
Give yourself a full travel day. Choose the transport option that suits your budget and luggage. Allow time for breaks. If you are heading toward Malapascua, leave Moalboal early and keep the last boat in mind.
